[ ⎯it's a stupid notion, a notion he should have abandoned when he was younger - that gideon was untouchable. with skin built so thick it could withstand anything. the unstoppable force against every immovable object.

it's unwise, he reminds himself, everything loses momentum, eventually.

they're no longer young but it's not an age where death is a familiar friend. and when cameron gets the message through his personal adviser, it catches him by surprise. a reflexive sadness washing over him, drowning him for a moment until he remembers to speak. to issue arrangements and make plans. he hasn't had the time to keep in touch, to be an active part of any life other than his own.

( partly because they're reminders, reminders of a time lost and something he can never come back to again. they're reminders when things were easier, when nick didn't have a bullet through the skull and cameron learned to be someone without his titles. to be liked for more than his fame or wealth. a reminder that he was more than his duties, more than a child trying to fill his brother's large shoes, more than a king who was the second option.

-- he's had to give that at all up. the weight of a country doesn't just rest on his shoulders, it crushes and bares it's weight against him and cameron can do nothing but take it all. )

however, he owes gideon this.

he files it away as a personal affair and requests privacy from his council. he tells them: 'a week at most, the kingdom won't fall without me' and he'll spend every moment in their company wondering if it will.

His heart gets as heavy as his footsteps which creak along the pier as he joins their company. The hands in the pockets of his dark brown houndstooth over coat nervously clench into fists. he hasn't spoken to either of them in a decade and though he can deduce the little things from the minute details in both their bearings - he doesn't know them any better than he knows strangers. Interrupting their conversation entirely. ]

Rumors tells me you were dying.

[ the tone harbors as much warmth as it does cynicism. Flashing them both an easy grin. ]

I've never been known for punctuality.
